Three Killed in Tel Aviv Shooting (International 2)

A “terrorist attack” occurred on Wednesday in Tel Aviv at a popular gourmet food and retail shop. The attack resulted in the death of three people. According to CNN, six others became wounded. Spokesman, Luba Samarai, of the Israeli police told USA, “two gunmen were ‘neutralized,’ which can mean either killed or detained.”

Though the police put two gunmen in custody, they believe a third gunman is “still on the run”, BBC explains. USA informs that, according to Chico Edri, the head of Israel Police’s Tel Aviv district, the incident is over. After the police took control of the situation, they put it to an end.

Reason:

I feel this news is important because it directly and indirectly affects many people. News like this upsets its readers. When I read the article, the words, “terrorist attack” caught my attention, which made me feel disgusted. This story came out today, which makes it extremely recent news.

Yellowstone Hot Spring Accident Reported (National 2)

On Tuesday, a witness reported seeing a man fall into a hot spring called Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone National Park. She described him as a man in his early 20s. Since a body has not been discovered, searchers decided to respond to the case as a probable fatality, all according to CNN and NBC.

ABC shares, “The Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest and most dynamic thermal area in Yellowstone, which features springs that can reach temperatures close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.” As the search continues, authorities need to be careful around the hot spring and proceed with caution.

Reason:
I chose this story because it was covered by various, credible news sources. As well as that, Yellowstone National Park is a popular vacation spot. Because of it, this news might have an indirect effect on current and future visitors. The accident happened this week, which makes the news recent.

Belgian Trainwreck (International)

A serious train crash, which occurred in a Belgian town, Hermalle-sous-Huy, resulted in three people dead and several others sent to the hospital.

CNN reports that a passenger train holding 40 people collided into the rear of a still cargo train that sat on the same track. The passenger train was said to be traveling at around its normal speed.

Information given by BBC said, “Two of the six carriages derailed and are lying on the tracks...” Infrabel and national rail operator NMBS/SNCB disclosed.

Along with the damage done to the carriages, it was said, “The wheels and axle of one train car were knocked loose by the impact. A large chunk of wreckage jutted up from the freight train of around 20 cars.”

According to ABC, the three found dead included two passengers as well as the train’s driver. Reports say that it took about three hours to free the passengers from this trainwreck.

The reason for the collision is currently under investigation by the railway police and state prosecutors. Spokesman, Frederic Petit, shared that “the lightning strike is a possible line of inquiry, but there are still safety systems which are supposed to come into place.”

Reason:

This story is fascinating, but it is also terrifying. Being in a situation like this would be a nightmare. What really caught my attention was the fact that only three were killed; however, I am not saying that the passing of three is not tragic. I’m really intrigued by finding out what happened to cause a wreck like this, though.

No Charges Faced by Mother of Toddler in Gorilla Incident (National)

Joseph Deters, Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney, announced during a news conference that the mother involved in the toddler-gorilla incident won’t be faced with any charges.

Deters commented, "By all accounts, this mother did not act in any way where she presented this child to some harm." He also weighed in saying that the woman was also in charge of three other children and needed to switch her attention to the others for a short moment, adding, “...and if anyone doesn't believe a 3-year-old can scamper off very quickly, they've never had kids.”

NBC informs that Deters “did not see any criminal liability for the zoo or its Dangerous Animal Response Team” for the fatal shot of the gorilla. A later comment made by the zoo stated that tranquilizing the gorilla would have taken up too much time.

According to CNN, Deters shared, “the zoo lost ‘a beautiful animal’ that was beloved in the community, ‘but it's still an animal. It does not equate human life.’"

They boy’s family stated they were “very pleased” with how the situation turned out, said ABC. After this step, the family believes they are closer to returning to their normal life, and they thank those who include them in their prayers and those who have been supporting them.

Reason:

Since this story became very popular, I thought it was interesting to look at what happened next. As the actual situation stirred up a little controversy, I feel this will, too. Deters seemed to make some really good points in his argument, and I thought those proved fascinating to read. Overall, I’m interested in hearing and seeing the variety of thoughts and feelings that are about to come from this decision.
